Discover why houses in astrology charts differ in size and the impact on astrological interpretation.
article by Priya Deshmukh
Astrology is a complex system of beliefs and practices that depends upon the celestial positions of planets and stars to describe and predict human affairs and terrestrial events. At the heart of astrology lies the concept of twelve 'houses,' which are integral to astrological charts. Each house represents a different area of life, from love and relationships to career and health. Many who are new to astrology, however, notice a peculiar feature: the houses are not all the same size. This is not by accident, but rather due to the specific methods used to construct natal charts and the celestial mechanics related to the Earth's rotation. Understanding these sizes and how they vary can provide deeper insights into an individual's astrological readings, revealing a more nuanced and personalized interpretation.
The astrological houses are calculated based on the Earth's rotation and the time and place of one's birth. There are several systems to calculate these houses, with the Placidus system being among the most popular in Western astrology. Due to the Earth's axial tilt and its elliptical orbit around the Sun, the rate at which celestial bodies rise and set varies depending on the observer’s geographical location and the time of year. Consequently, in the Placidus system and other similar approaches, some houses will appear stretched, while others appear compressed. This results in the houses having different sizes when the chart is drawn. While this might seem unusual, it is this variation that allows astrologers to offer readings that account for the individual's specific time and place in the world.
The most significant reason for the variation in house sizes is the latitude of the place where a person is born. Closer to the poles, the discrepancy in house size becomes more pronounced due to the extreme angles at which the Sun and planets rise and set. Near the equator, the houses are more evenly sized because celestial bodies pass more directly overhead. As a person's birth location moves up in latitude, towards the poles, some houses can span for a much longer time than others. This effect is a key consideration in astrological interpretation and plays a crucial role in understanding the unique influence the planets exert on each house.
Aside from the Placidus system, there are other house systems like the Equal House, Whole Sign, and Koch systems, which astrologers utilize according to their preferences and the context of the reading. Each system has its own method of dividing the chart, meaning that house sizes can differ even among these systems. The Whole Sign House system, for instance, assigns equal sizes to all houses, disregarding the variations due to latitude. This diversity in house calculation plays a part in the different interpretations and viewpoints within the astrological community, with some astrologers preferring a particular system for its symbolic or practical significance.
The size of an astrological house in a natal chart can significantly impact the interpretation by an astrologer. Larger houses might hint at greater prominence or challenges in areas of life represented by that house, while smaller houses indicate less overt influence. For instance, a large 10th house could suggest a substantial focus on career or public life, whereas a smaller 5th house might mean that creativity and pleasure are less dominant themes. By considering the size of each house in the context of celestial placements, astrologers can provide detailed predictions for personal development, opportunities, relationships, and more as the planets transit through these houses in coming years, starting from 2024 onward.
In future-focused astrology, such as transits or synastry, the variances in house sizes play an important role. As planets move through the zodiac in the upcoming years, they will enter and exit houses at times unique to each individual's chart. Understanding the different sizes of houses will help in forecasting personal growth and challenges. In synastry, where two charts are compared for compatibility, the intersecting houses of different sizes can reveal intricate layers of harmony or discord between individuals. Accurate interpretation of these aspects can guide personal relationships and self-understanding in the years beyond 2024.
