Equal House System: Maintaining Balance

The Equal House system is another approach where the first house cusp is the ascendant and each house is equal in span – 30 degrees. This method emphasizes balance and parity, avoiding the irregularities that can occur in other systems due to location and time differences. While it may not account for the diurnal arc's variation, its proponents find value in the equal emphasis it grants to each sphere of life. Due to its consistency, it's particularly useful for understanding the basic nature of the houses in a chart.

Koch and Regiomontanus: Space and Time Considered

More complex systems such as Koch and Regiomontanus incorporate space-and-time calculations similar to Placidus but with distinct methods for projecting the ecliptic onto the prime vertical. Koch, primarily used in German-speaking countries, is sensitive to higher latitudes and is thus less reliable for extreme geographical locations. Regiomontanus, preferred for predictive work like Solar Returns, takes a more space-oriented approach. Each of these systems reflects varying astrological philosophies and techniques honed for different types of readings and predictions.

Choosing the Right House System

Selecting a house system is often a matter of tradition, personal preference, and the astrological work at hand. While Placidus reigns popular, Whole Sign offers historical resonance and simplicity. Equal House promotes uniformity, whereas Koch and Regiomontanus present nuanced approaches for specific locations or reading types. In 2024 and beyond, astrologers might lean more heavily toward systems like Whole Sign and Placidus as they continue to engage with both the deep roots and evolving trends within astrological practice.
